Pliteq Swimming Pool Isolation with GenieMat® FF
When a swimming pool is installed within a multi-residential building, hotel, or commercial building, they introduce a source of noise and vibration that can be disturbing to nearby occupants if not properly isolated.
To reduce sound and vibration transmission, the pool structure must be resiliently isolated from the building structure. Pliteq’s GenieMat FF is a low dynamic stiffness resilient interlayer to isolate swimming pools on rooftops and suspended slab, to prevent disturbances to tenants below, beside, and above.
Pliteq’s GenieMat FF is a continuous isolation solution, which means easy installation and compatibility with all pool shell types and shapes. To assist in design, Pliteq provides complimentary engineering services using finite element analysis (FEA) and two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) modelling to satisfy deflection criteria and predict system natural frequency to effectively isolate swimming pool noise.
For example, a pool proposed in a rooftop amenity space is 1.5 m deep and has a 200 mm concrete shell. It is situated above a luxury penthouse, and the separating structural slab is 250 mm thick with a natural frequency of 12 Hz. Adding GenieMat FF50 to the system reduces the low natural frequency peak to ~5.4 Hz and lowers the transmissibility of the higher frequency peak to below the level of amplification.
Using a 2DOF model better represents the system performance, rather than relying on the isolator’s natural frequency and isolation efficiency.
Discrete isolators, such as springs or elastomeric mounts, are subject to air stiffness in the cavity, which greatly increases the natural frequency of the system. If this isn’t accounted for, the system’s performance decreases significantly. The GenieMat FF is a continuous interlayer, which greatly reduces the effect of air stiffness by filling the cavity. It can also reduce the plenum depth to as low as 25 mm.
GenieMat FF is ideal for swimming pool isolation because it will not rust, corrode, or propagate mold in wet areas. It also meets criteria for a drainage mat in accordance with ASTM D4716 and ASTM D4491, meaning it is approved and warranted for exterior applications.
